2019 Ferguson Memorial Walk Celebrates ‘Family’

Orangeville, ON   September 16th, 2019 —  The Ferguson Memorial Walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd at Island Lake from 9am to 3pm. The 9th annual walk hosted by Family Transition Place (FTP) is building on the work of previous years to make this day a joyful celebration of the life of a beautiful woman, daughter and mother.  Although the walk was originally founded as a memorial to Heidi Ferguson, the intent of the day has always been to celebrate Heidi’s life and legacy and to raise awareness of domestic violence. From the beginning, Heidi’s family and the team at FTP, have wanted to provide an event that the whole family can enjoy while still raising awareness for such an important community issue. This year there are even more ways for the whole family to participate.

On September 12, 2009 Heidi Lee Ferguson, nee Bogner, lost her life due to a tragic domestic dispute with her estranged husband. In remembrance of her life, the Ferguson Memorial Walk was created to raise awareness and help prevent future violence against women. Funds are also used to create education programs to eliminate violence. To date, the Ferguson Memorial Walk has raised $120,000 in support of FTP.

“FTP has a great relationship with Gus and Penny Bogner, parents of Heidi Ferguson, who hosted the previous 8 years of the Ferguson Memorial Walk. We are honoured to continue their mission to take the tragedy experienced in their family, to help other families in our community” said Stacey Tarrant, Marketing of Development and Community Relations at FTP. “Violence is not just an issue for women, it is an issue that affects the entire family. This is why we are pleased to host an event everyone, from grandparents to grandchildren, can enjoy” added Tarrant.

Mayor Sandy Brown will be attending. “I knew Heidi – I hired her a couple times in her capacity as an interior designer. I am very supportive of bringing awareness to the continuing problem of domestic violence. The Ferguson Memorial Walk raises funds to help those in need and to support education programs to help prevent domestic abuse and violence. This is a great legacy to Heidi’s memory and a way for her many friends and family to celebrate her life” said Mayor Brown.

The 2019 Ferguson Memorial Walk has family friendly activities for all ages including: a bouncy castle, vendor marketplace, Paw Patrol characters, Family Fair, music, as well as a silent auction and raffle. A big FTP supporter and all-around good sport, Mayor Sandy Brown, will be sitting post in a dunk tank. The $20 registration fee includes admission to Island Lake; children 12 and under are free.
