The Power of Taking Time Off
The Power of Taking Time Off
Does your business understand the importance of taking time off?
Every month the team at Dufferin Media gets together on Zoom for a monthly “lunch n learn” whereas in a group we learn about a topic so we can continually improve together. This month our General Manager, Stephanie Adams, hosted the “Lunch’n’Learn” with an amazing topic that had the whole team engaged and sharing ideas. She had us watch a quick video by Stefan Sagmeister who runs a creative team. Their entire company shuts down for a full year every 7 years. Now, we don’t suggest going quite that far, but there is definitely something to be said about the power of taking a break, recharging, and in the end being more creative and more productive.
We felt it would be an amazing discussion to turn into a blog post so we can share with others some of the tools that our team members use to “Take Time Off”, recharge, relax, and practice self-care.
Benefits of Taking Time Off
In this fast-paced world, we are overworked, overstimulated, and overwhelmed. Being too busy, having too many tabs open, and multitasking to the point of exhaustion is actually counterproductive. Both business owners, employees, and team members will not be as productive and as efficient if they are operating in this stressful environment for a long period of time. Some of the benefits of taking time off are:
- higher productivity
- renewed creativity
- stronger workplace morale
- significant health benefits both mental and physical
- renewed energy
- genius brainstorms
Ways to Take a Break to Recharge
Even if you are not able to take a full year sabbatical like Stefan and his team, it is a great idea to plan a few breaks from work each year where you can relax and unplug for an extended period of time. A long weekend, a week’s vacation or more, etc will all be beneficial for you and your business.
Taking a break during your day can also be a great tool. If you find yourself staring at the same work or email for too long, chances are you need a break. Here are some tips from the Dufferin Media Team:
- exercise
- go for a walk
- move your workspace i.e. outside or to a different room
- do a completely different task i.e. bake a cake
- do something completely fun & goofy
- meditate
- say positive mantras, have a positive mindset
